About the Artist

Graeme Coxon

The works on this site attempt to emulate in form and simplicity the long tradition of botanical illustration using digital photographic techniques.

The plants and other subjects have been photographed using a high-resolution digital scanning process. Most use reflected light, like conventional photography, to capture the images. But for some transparent or translucent subjects transmitted light has been used, similar to how slide film has been viewed or how stained glass is seen when lit from behind.

The scanning technique has allowed me to capture a very high level of detail in the subjects, and also to separate them from their backgrounds, producing what I hope is a look and feel of more traditional botanical paintings, drawings and prints.

I have found the plants  and insects in these studies largely in Ontario, but also in British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Vermont. The seaweeds are from Vancouver Island, BC and Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia.
